Many developers have spoken enthusiastically in the past about the possible arrival of a new console generation. Electronic Arts, however, does not seem to be in quite such a hurry.
Frank Gibeau said the company did not yet see the added value of a new PlayStation or Xbox console at that point. A 1080p display had already been reached and internet connectivity was already in place, leaving improvements such as speed and more polygons, but those would come with a serious price tag. Electronic Arts was curious about Sony and Microsoft's future plans, but was still happy developing games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Gibeau indicated that EA was not focused on the next generation at that moment. The company was concentrating on current projects and on the success it was already having with existing hardware.
According to Gibeau, Battlefield 3 was a good example of what developers could still achieve on current consoles. Unsurprisingly, it was also a game published by EA itself. He praised Frostbite 2 technology, but also expected impressive work from competitors.
Gibeau also said it was not only publishers and developers who were in no rush for a new generation of consoles. Consumers themselves were still satisfied with what the current machines offered.
