Kelvin Lau, chief financial officer at Perfect World, announced the change today during a call with investors.
Perfect World acquired Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studios earlier this year. Lau said Cryptic was working on a free-to-play model for Star Trek Online, with the new model expected to launch before the end of the year. According to Lau, the switch should give the game access to a larger market in both America and China.
Cryptic Studios' other MMO, Champions Online, already moved to a free-to-play model earlier this year.
