Minecraft Classic

Mine like it’s 2009

Starting today, you can play the original Minecraft - complete with all its bugs - right in your web browser. To celebrate the iconic game’s upcoming 10th anniversary, developer Mojang has released Minecraft Classic: a browser-based version that preserves the game as it was back in 2009.

That means a much more Spartan look, only 32 blocks to build with, and all the technical quirks and rough edges from the early days. So do not expect a modern survival experience, a crafting system, or an extensive interface. This is very much a trip back to the earliest public version of Minecraft.

Minecraft 2009 is even more glorious than we remembered!

wrote Mojang’s Tom Stone in the announcement post. With that, the studio is clearly leaning into nostalgia at a time when Minecraft has long grown into far more than just a PC game. Compared to the current version, Minecraft Classic feels extremely bare-bones, but that is also exactly what makes this browser release interesting for older players and curious newcomers alike.

The browser version is free to play and also lets players share a link and play together with up to nine other people. That makes it not only a piece of digital history, but also an easy way to experience the earliest public version of Minecraft all over again.
