In addition to a home entertainment device, Google is also working on a personal communications device and is building two test labs and a showroom to demonstrate its own hardware to partners, according to several American media reports.
Last week it became known that Google was working on a home entertainment system capable of streaming music. It would be the first piece of hardware released under Google's own name.
It now appears that the search giant is working on even more hardware projects. An application has reportedly been filed for a personal communication device with the Telecom and Media division of the American regulator FCC.
The San Jose Mercury also reviewed documents showing that Google wants to build two test labs on its Mountain View campus. Products made by Google would be tested there. The company is also building an Experience Center, a kind of showroom where Google can present its own hardware to partners.
Earlier this month it emerged that Google had hired Apple employee Simon Prakash for a secret project. At Apple, Prakash was responsible for product quality. Whether he is involved in the new hardware projects is not known.
