Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 combines a large computer role-playing game with rules and ideas from tabletop Dungeons & Dragons. Its PC history includes almost three years of Early Access, a major 2023 release and substantial post-launch additions.

This dossier separates those stages and explains why patches, mods, saves and installation size matter when documenting the game.

At a glance

Baldur's Gate 3 is a party-based role-playing game by Larian Studios. It entered Early Access on PC in October 2020 and received its full PC release on 3 August 2023.

The game is designed around choices, turn-based combat and a highly reactive story. Patch 8, released in April 2025, was announced as the final major patch and added cross-play, photo mode and twelve new subclasses.

Early Access was not the final game

The Early Access version was a development build centred mainly on the first act. Classes, systems, scenes and performance changed before the full release.

Old videos and guides can therefore describe content that was replaced, moved or rebalanced. Early Access save files were not compatible with the final release.

For historical research, Early Access should be treated as a separate documented stage rather than an unfinished copy of exactly the same game.

Mods add another version layer

Baldur's Gate 3 developed a large PC modding scene. Larian later added official mod support, an in-game mod manager and a toolkit for PC creators.

A save that depends on mods may fail to load correctly after those mods are removed or updated. Preserve the mod list, load order and exact versions alongside important saves.

Major patches can also change the technical requirements for mods. A working setup should therefore be documented before the game or mod manager updates it.

Storage and installation matter

The official requirements specify an SSD. The game is large, and major updates may temporarily require substantial extra free space while files are replaced.

Keeping only one installation is convenient but fragile. For preservation or long-running modded campaigns, record the store, game version, installed language, mod configuration and save location.

Cloud saves are useful for continuity, but they are not a complete archive. Keep a separate local backup of important campaigns.

Why the PC version matters

The PC version was the first full release and remains the main platform for community modifications, the official toolkit and detailed configuration options.

It also demonstrates how a modern single-player and cooperative RPG can remain locally playable while still depending on patches, account services, optional cross-save and an evolving mod ecosystem.
