Cyberpunk 2077 is not one fixed PC release. The version launched in December 2020 differs substantially from the game after patches, Update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion.
That makes the game useful as both a modern PC dossier and a lesson in version history: screenshots, reviews, system requirements and mods may describe very different states of the same title.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world action RPG developed by CD PROJEKT RED. It launched for PC on 10 December 2020 and later received extensive technical and mechanical changes.
For most modern discussions, the important baseline is Update 2.0. It rebuilt major systems including perks, cyberware, police behaviour and vehicle combat. The Ultimate Edition combines the updated base game with the Phantom Liberty expansion.
The launch version, Patch 1.5 and Update 2.0 do not merely differ in bug fixes. They represent distinct stages of the game, with changes to balancing, progression, AI, equipment and the technical baseline.
A guide or mod written for one stage may be misleading or unusable on another. When researching the game, always check the publication date and version number.
For preservation, a save file alone is incomplete. The game build, installed expansion, mods and configuration determine whether that save will still behave as expected.
CD PROJEKT RED revised the official PC requirements before Phantom Liberty. The newer baseline assumes a 64-bit version of Windows 10 and an SSD rather than the older launch-era configuration.
That means a PC that met the original minimum requirements may not represent the later game. Performance discussions should therefore state the patch, graphics preset, resolution and whether ray tracing or path tracing was used.
Cyberpunk 2077 became a prominent demonstration of ray tracing, upscaling and later path tracing, but these settings are optional and far more demanding than the standard rendering modes.
The Ultimate Edition combines the base game, the free Update 2.0 changes, previously released free content and the paid Phantom Liberty expansion.
The name is useful when buying a current copy, but it should not erase the earlier release history. The 2020 launch version and later patched states are historically relevant because they explain why reviews, requirements and player experiences can contradict one another.
The PC release sits at the centre of Cyberpunk 2077's technical identity. It scales from conventional rasterised graphics to demanding ray-traced and path-traced modes, while also supporting extensive community mods.
That flexibility makes the PC version a moving target. A carefully documented setup can be more informative than simply stating that the game ran well or badly.
